The boys currently live in Manhattan and attend Loyola on the Upper East Side during the day. But it’s what they do outside of school that will absolutely floor you. After they complete their homework, they each head off to engage in more sports than you probably thought could fit into one person’s weekly schedule. Sometimes it’s your typical soccer scrimmage, basketball game or little league practice, but other days it’s their favorite sport of all, Gaelic football.
“Gaelic football is an Irish sport,” said Niall, whose name comes from a Gaelic term meaning “champion.” “You can use your hands, but it’s less physical than rugby, and it’s like soccer except that if you get it over the [H-shaped] goal, it counts as one point; if you get it in the goal, it’s three points.”
The boys are crazy about it. They travel to the Bronx twice a week for practices and games, and Coner travels every summer to compete against squads hailing from all across North America. Niall and Evan will surely follow suit once they reach the appropriate age.
When not shuffling between athletic activities, the boys are less rivals at home and more friends. They take a ball to a local park to kick and throw around during the afternoon, and when it gets dark, the sports arena becomes a wall in their home.
The time spent playing together manifests itself in the brothers’ knack for finding each other— especially Niall and Evan, who are closest in age—when they step away from home onto the pitch.“One of my favorite sports moments happened when I was playing for my Gaelic football team with Niall,” Evan said. “The ball was going out of bounds and he saved it and hit it to me. I kicked it to one of our teammates who scored an important goal.”
It’s certainly a good thing that they can play Gaelic football collectively, because only Niall knows a classmate that plays the atypical sport. The sport survives through Irish-Americans with strong ties to Ireland and it doesn’t capture the widespread interest of kids the way other televised sports do. So the McStay’s rely on their teams, their father (a big fan of the sport) and each other to get better. And considering their jam-packed athletic calendar and the myriad activities in which their friends participate, they cherish that occasional opportunity to just hang out and polish their games with each other.
“A lot of kids we play with at school don’t have brothers or sisters, or they do but they’re not friends or they don’t play sports,” Coner said. “So we’re lucky to have somebody that we can always play sports with and knows how to play competitively. It’s a lot of fun.”
