Do I have to wear a helmet AND pads for skateboarding?

There’s a lot of talk about skateboarding being dangerous. Adults tell me I can get really hurt, but I see kids all over the place riding and having fun. Some have helmets and other stuff on, but other kids don’t wear any pads. What do you think I should do?—Nick, 11, Astoria
