More Court Time at Sportime

World Class Tennis Facility Opens on Randall’s Island

By Neil Landwehr
New York City loves its tennis. Usually, we wait until the end of Summer for the U.S. Open to serves as the altar of our local tennis mania.

Now with the June 27th opening of Sportime’s new tennis complex, Sportime at Randall’s Island, New Yorkers finally have a professional training facility befitting a town that lives and dies with every serve and volley. Located next to the old tennis center on Randall’s Island, the new Sportime at Randall’s Island includes fifteen seasonal courts—ten clay and five Deco-Turf—that remain uncovered in the summer and covered for the colder months, with five courts permanently indoors.

Sportime at Randall’s Island serves in large part as a training facility for emerging junior talent. Seventeen-year old Teddy Margolis has been playing tennis in and around the city since he was old enough to hold a racket.

He learned the fundamentals at Sportime Hamptons and then took the next step by enrolling in the Sportime accelerated Elite program at age twelve.

“[Sportime’s] key is to have fun; striking a balance between having fun and working hard.” Said Teddy. “That works for me.”

The new Randall’s Island location is particularly enticing to a player like Teddy, who lives downtown and trains six days a week. The junior clubhouse shares all of the amenities of the adult counterpart, including a full gym and cardio training center.

Sportime runs tennis-training programs for players of all ages and ability.

The European-based Quick Start program is an entry level class that starts players with mini-racquets and courts, but quickly progresses to playing matches.

And if you like watching pro tennis, NYC’s own Team Tennis franchise, the New York Sportimes will play their home matches at the new center. The Sportimes, anchored by John McEnroe, begin play July 2 at the 2,000-seat main court. The Sportime team will also be on hand June 27th and 28th as part of the opening weekend celebration at the complex.

Other activities schedule for the opening include tryouts for spots on local tennis teams, membership sign-up, and opportunities to obtain your USTA Ability Rating for proper lesson placement.

New York’s newest tennis venue is by all accounts spectacular. But don’t just take our word for it. Listen to Teddy: “Some sites in New York aren’t half as good.” In this city, from 17-year old, that’s a rave.

Warning! The application that Sportime provides for classes and instruction is merely "guidance" - once you sign up they try to railroad you into a clinic of mixed genders and levels which bears no resemblence to what you signed up for. They're also much more focused on their junior program then any other part of their tennis program.
