Bringing Up Battery

Asphalt Green adds a new member to its family of sports facilities

By NYFS Staff
The Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority announced in February that it selected the venerable New York City-based not-for-profit, Asphalt Green, to operate its new stateof-the-art, 52,000-square-foot community center, which will be located in the base of Liberty Green and Liberty Luxe, two residential towers located on North End Avenue between Murray and Warren Streets. The center is slated to open in January 2012. Here, New York Family Sports will give you a sneak peak at the plans for the brand new center that is sure to bring the excellence of Asphalt Green’s Upper East Side sports programs to families all across Manhattan.

“We are so proud to have an organization of Asphalt Green’s caliber operating what will be an invaluable resource to the downtown community,” said James Gill, Chairman of the Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority. “From art classes to fitness training, this center will have something for everyone.”

The community center will include a 25-yard pool, warm-water teaching/exercise pool, fitness center, gym, studios, classrooms, culinary center, theater and other multi-use spaces.

“We are thrilled about this new opportunity,” said Carol Tweedy, Asphalt Green’s Executive Director.

“Opening up a downtown campus gives us a broader platform to help individuals of all ages and backgrounds achieve health through a lifetime of sports and fitness.”

Asphalt Green has built its reputation as the city’s premier sports and fitness center by providing a mix of highly sought-after fee-based activities as well as free community programs both on and off its 5.5-acre Upper East Side campus. Founded in 1975, the organization offers a wide variety of sports, swimming and fitness programs for children and adults. It plans to offer many of the same options at its new Battery Park City location, including adult and family memberships for the pool and fitness center, as well as arts and cultural programming.

“There is a real need for this kind of facility in lower Manhattan,” said James Cavanaugh, President of the Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority. “This center is in response to a long-standing community need for indoor space where the neighborhood could gather and learn.” Downtown Manhattan, get ready for a surge of sporting opportunities for your youngsters!
