“What is the difference between Bikram and Hatha Yoga? And for athletics, which is better for me?” —Shantel, 17 Tribeca
Hatha Yoga describes any of the physical practices of yoga. It is often used as a general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. Therefore, regardless of what type of yoga you are doing, if it incorporates a physical practice (asanas/postures), you are doing Hatha Yoga. If you see a class described as Hatha Yoga, it will likely be a slower paced class. This is a good place to learn basic poses, relaxation techniques and become comfortable with yoga.
Bikram Yoga was created by Bikram Choudhury.
Bikram Yoga consists of a set series of 26 poses practiced in a 105-degree room. This allows for a loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweating, which is thought to be cleansing. Bikram Yoga is often referred to as Hot Yoga. However, not all Hot Yoga is Bikram Yoga. There a number of types of yoga to choose from. Regardless of which practice you choose, yoga can help strengthen and stretch the muscles and improve focus and balance. By trying different practices, you can choose which style feels the best for you.Bio:
