Q & A: Emma & Sophie Lasry

Sister Act

By Christian Emsiek

First there was Cain and Abel, then Heckle and Jeckle, Frick and Frack, Mary-Kate and Ashley and now Sophie and Emma. The Lasry sisters are twins, but you can’t tell by looking at them, and you definitely wouldn’t know from the way they play basketball. By all accounts these dynamic but very different Trevor Day School sophomore sisters are poised to make major impact in the Girls Independent School Athletic League this season.
Here, the sibling hoopsters share their pre-game rituals, reveal their special “sixth sense” and circle the calendar for a rematch with an old foe.

How long have you been playing basketball?
Emma: I only started really playing basketball on a team in eighth grade. I grew up playing basketball with my brothers at home, though.
Sophie: I started shooting around when I was six years old and played on my first team when I was in 6th grade. You could say I got a little head start on Emma. (laughs)

Do you have any pregame rituals?
Emma: I listen to the same playlist on my IPod before every game. I like to listen to really high energy songs that I can dance to.

Who are some of the artists on your playlist?
Emma: (Laughs and looks down) I don’t know, I have a lot of favorites. Um, right now my favorite is probably Flo Rida.

Sophie, are you all about Flo Rida too?

Sophie: (Laughs) No way. I need to be by myself in a quiet place for a good five minutes or so before every game. I like be alone to collect my thoughts and set goals for the game.

Are you guys different on the court?
Sophie:
I get much more serious than Emma. I’m much more of a head case. (pauses) You see, basketball is the sport I love. When I’m on the court, I just focus on playing my best. I don’t really talk.
Emma: She’s basically the offense and I’m strictly defense. I like to play defense. Sometimes I yell at other players, you know, to intimidate them. (laughs) I can try to play offense but I’m no where near as good as Sophie. She’s the best point guard in the league -- I’m not even kidding. But I don’t get “head-casey” like Sophie.

Who wins in a game of H-O-R-S-E?
Emma: SHE WOULD KILL ME! (laughing)
Sophie: I’ve been playing horse with my brothers forever. They taught me how to shoot. They’re older -- 18 and 21. They play recreationally in college but they’re too short to ever play on the real team. (giggles).

Sometimes twins can finish each other’s sentences and practically read each other’s minds. You guys have any of that on the court?
Emma: Yeah it’s really cool! It’s like a sixth sense or something. We work really well together and our strengths on the court compliment each other’s. While Sophie is on offense, I stay back and play defense.

We always know what the other is thinking.

At the risk of creating a stick to beat myself with, do you ever get tired of people asking you about being twins?
Emma: Not at all! Most people don’t even think that we’re related! People always are surprised when they find out that we’re not only sisters, but twins too.

So, you guys could never pull off the old “switch the uniforms to confuse the opposing team” trick?
Sophie: Yeah, we would have a hard time switching uniforms and convincing people that we’re same. We don’t look like twins at all. (Laughs).

What are your goals for this season?
Emma: My goal is for us to come together as a team. Trevor Day is a young team. We have only one senior and the rest are all freshman and sophomores. I hope that by the end of the season, we know all the plays and everyone knows what they’re supposed to be doing.
Sophie: My goal is to play the best that I possibly can and for Trevor to finish first in the league. Also, I injured my wrist in a scrimmage at the beginning of the season. So, one of my goals is to no re-injure myself. And, It would be great to make the All-Star team again.

When you look at the schedule, who do you guys really look forward to playing this season?

Sophie and Emma: (in unison) DWIGHT!
Sophie: Dwight beat us in the championship game last year and we are determined to beat them this year!
Emma: After we lost to them last year, it lit a fire in all of the girls who are returning this season. It’s a rivalry between us and Dwight -- plain and simple.
