The New Balance Track and Field Center at the 168th Street Armory is well known as one of the premier indoor track and field facilities in America. But did you know that it has been home to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame since 2004? For the price of a subway ride, you can tour this amazing shrine that not only honors world-class athletes but provides a multifaceted positive environment for New York City’s youngsters eager can play, grow and dream.
The National Track and Field Hall of Fame consists of three levels of highly interactive exhibits, designed to encourage “the adoption of excellence” through the emulation of past champions. On the first two levels, visitors can watch videos of famous races, trace the route of the New York City Marathon on a map etched into the floor, and even compare their own long jumps to that of both the men’s and women’s world-record holders.
The third level features the Hall of Fame Gallery, a 40-foot-long glass wall with the names of its 229 inductees engraved upon it. Just beyond the glass looms the 65,000square-foot arena that every year plays host to 2,500 spectators of the world’s largest high school and collegiate track and field events, the very arena where many of the Hall of Fame’s inductees earned their place.
Excellence radiates from every aspect of the building right down to the very people who monitor its halls.
Dr. Norbert Sander, Executive Director of the Armory Track and Field Foundation, is the only New York City resident ever to win the New York City Marathon, while Derrick Adkins, Director of Track and Field and Educational Development, won Olympic Gold at the Atlanta Games in 1996.“Keepings Kids on Track,” the Armory Track and Field Foundation’s official slogan, implies that their mission is not only the athletic but educational. Their Technology and Learning Center that offers free educational programs currently serves about 3,000 participants.
“Track can take you somewhere, and not just in circles,” said Rita Finkel, Director of Business Development. “Our goal has always been to show kids the value of good health, discipline, dedication, and most importantly, education. Every kid should find a sport, and track is a sport for everyone.” Clearly, so is the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.
