Toning Your Tyke

5 programs where babies Build Their Brawn

By Alyssa Atzeff
For children between the ages of 2 and 5, who may not be ready or right for semiorganized sports, there are a number of innovative programs throughout nYc that give those future firstround draft picks a place to nurture their inner body builder. even the soft frames of small children can benefit from a routine of simple but relatively demanding exercises. but don’t let that scare you off. light resistance training and aerobic activity helps your little one build necessary muscles and instills healthy fitness habits for years to come. we’ve saved you the heavy lifting and hand-picked a few toddler toughening classes to consider.

BIG MUSCLE BUILDERS (2 Yrs) calling all baby schwarzenegger’s, Kidville has just the class for you! encouraging and attentive instructors lead classes in a strength building program that provides everything from a trip through an obstacle course to a bounce down the tumbltrak into a massive foam pillow. if you peek over at the giant block corner you’ll see energetic little builders, using their developing quads and pecs to lift, carry, and stack. For 45 minutes the children work out their extra energy all the while toning their young bodies.

GYMTIME SPORTS AND FITNESS (2 Yrs) Jump, pass, kick and stretch! (Phew. we’re tired already.) coach chris and the taut tots at gymtime engage in a well rounded cardio workout, developing stamina, balance and flexibility. as the semester progresses so do coach chris’s teaching methods as he conducts increasingly innovative classes in fitness and the fundamentals of multiple sports. whether your child chooses one sport or several down the road, she will have a solid foundation to succeed in her sport of their choice!

FITNESS FUN (3-5Yrs) Richard Simmons had “sweatin’ to the oldies,” now gymboree has kids making fitness music of their own. adorned with jingle bells on their wrists and ankles, budding workout warriors burn through an hour of intense aerobic activity.

don’t forget your water bottles because this class reminds kids that it’s important to stay hydrated. here an emphasis on stretching and flexibility lays the groundwork for creating strong and limber maturing bodies.
