“I am a senior in high school, getting ready for college and want to become a sports medicine doctor. Many people are pointing me in different directions about what I have to study and how much schooling I need. Since you are a successful sports medicine doctor, could you fill me in on the type of education that prepared you to go into this field?” —Jasmen 17, Brooklyn
Being a sports medicine doctor is probably the coolest job in the world! Every day I get to help people of all ages achieve their sports goals, from professional athletes all the way down to little league athletes.
The interesting thing is that no matter what the age or athlete’s ability, everyone is always happy when we help get them back on the field. And making people happy and active is extremely rewarding. The best part about my job is that I get to combine my own love of fitness and sport with helping other people, so it’s extra rewarding. Not many people get the chance to do that. It takes a while to get there, but it’s worth the effort. You’ll need to study hard in college and find something that interests you while doing the pre-med curriculum. Then it’s four years of medical school, another four or five years of training after that in residency and fellowship, and finally, you’ll be good to go! I promise you, it’s worth the work to get there!--
