Appointing his father the day-to-day boss, Derek Jeter established the Turn 2 Foundation during his 1996 rookie year because he felt it was important to promote healthy lifestyles and academic achievement among young people. To quote the Turn 2 mission statement, the organization aims to “create and support signature programs and activities that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and ‘TURN 2’ healthy lifestyles.”
“Our foundation throughout the years has preached prevention of drugs and alcohol to promote a healthy lifestyle,” said Jeter. “This is a part of it—staying in shape, working out and exercising helps your health and makes you feel good about yourself.”
Jeter puts his money where his mouth is and challenges New York City kids to do the same.
No matter what Jeter does, he attaches Turn 2 to it. At a recent grand opening of a new 24 Hour Fitness—the Jeter health club franchise—located in Midtown, the Yankee captain barked out orders to local high school students who are also Turn 2 enrollees, putting them through the paces in a pro-style exercise session. Jeter knows exercise can deliver all kinds of benefits.Jeter’s Turn 2 foundation has numerous programs designed to develop healthy habits in young people, including scholarship programs, after-school activities and summer camps.
“Turn 2 strives to create outlets that promote and reward academic excellence, leadership development and positive behavior,” said the four-time World Series champion. “The goal is to see the children of these programs grow safely and successfully into adulthood and become the leaders of tomorrow.”
All the just from exercise? Who are we to question Derek Jeter!
